Louis Braille mengalami kerusakan pada salah satu matanya ketika berusia 3 tahun. Waktu itu secara tidak sengaja dia menikam matanya sendiri dengan alat pembuat lubang dari perkakas kerja ayahnya. Kemudian mata yang satunya terkena sympathetic ophthalmia, sejenis infeksi yang terjadi karena kerusakan mata yang lainnya. Kebutaan tidak membuatnya putus asa, ia menciptakan abjad Braille yang membantu orang buta juga bisa membaca. Sekarang siapa yang tidak tahu Abjad Braille?
